Latest firmware for Kenwood TS-950SDX
Kenwood updated the firmware for TS-950SDX HF radio during its production run in order to correct problems with certain CAT functionality (among other things). The firmware is stored in a 27c512 64KB EPROM chip on the digital unit. Unfortunately, replacement firmware chips are no longer available directly from Kenwood.
However, if you have access to en EPROM programmer and a blank 27c512 chip, you can make your own. The file below contains an image of the final TS-950SDX firmware update, revision JQGA, released by Kenwood. To update the firmware, you need to:
1) Obtain a 27c512 chip with 150ns access time (or better)
2) Program the provided binary image to the chip
3) Remove the top and bottom covers of the TS-950SDX
4) Remove the screws at the two top corners of the front panel and fold it down to reveal the digital unit
5) The existing EPROM is IC-19 on the digital unit -- locate this part and carefully remove it from its socket
6) Replace it with the newly created firmware EPROM
7) Re-assemble the radio
8) Turn on the radio while holding the A=B button to reset the CPU
9) Enjoy your updated rig
The manufacturer of the EPROM isn't important, as long as it meets the 150ns access time specification of the original part. You can use either a UV-erasable part or a one-time programmable part, as long as the pin-out is correct. A chip puller is recommended for removing the original EPROM, however it should be possible to pry it loose with a small screwdriver as well. (Use care to avoid damaging the digital unit.)
Note that the DSP unit is part of the bottom cover. You'll see a black heatsink assembly with two shiny screws in it, and two cables connecting to the back of the radio. The two shiny screws need to be removed and the cables must be unplugged in order to remove the bottom cover.
