NVIDIA/FreeBSD and SiS chipset troubles

You will need to do a few things before sending in a report, just to rule out errors from other sources.

Your XFree86 ports must be up-to-date - this means you want version 4.2.1 of these ports. Compile your kernel, XFree86-libraries, XFree86-clients, XFree86-Servers, and the NVIDIA FreeBSD driver WITHOUT OPTIMIZATIONS! This means, no -march or -mcpu and no -OX.

Turn off APM/ACPI and set PnP OS to 'No'/'Disabled' in your BIOS. Try not to run a GENERIC-style kernel with all types of devices (especially ISA) that you don't need. Please also try to disable the MTRRs as described in the FAQ.

Now, I'll need the output of a few commands:

  1. Verbose boot output: Reboot, hit space when the loader starts counting down, then type boot -v and hit Enter. When you're done booting, type dmesg > dmesg.boot.
  2. XF86Config: A copy of your XF86Config set up to run the 'nvidia' driver with glx enabled.
  3. Verbose startx output: startx -- -verbose 5 -logverbose 5. Of course, you'll be forced to reboot when the machine hangs, once you've rebooted, copy /var/log/XFree86.0.log to a safe place.
  4. PCI device output: pciconf -l > pciconf.
  5. Hardware info: A text file, called hardware, listing motherboard, chipset, graphics card and processor.

Once you have these things, please mail them to me. I will contact you if additional info is needed, or if I get more information relating to the problem. If you'd like to take a look at your report and those of others, check out this.
