The Citizens Initiative on Elementary Education is a grassroots level movement attempting to improve the quality of education in rural and urban India. A number of organizations are part of the CIEE; you can read more about them at their website.
As part of the initiative, the participating organizations and volunteers from the general public have started on a survey of the government run schools in the Indian state of Karnataka. They plan to cover approximately 55,000 schools, collecting detailed information about each school, and the community it is situated in.
The folks at MAYA who are part of the CIEE wanted to make the information gleaned from this survey available to the general public over the World Wide Web.
I happened to wander into the MAYA office one day, looking for my friend Murali, and got involved.
You probably won't find too much about CIEE in these pages. However, you will find information about the design of the CIEE Web Database Project.
To get an idea of the scope of the project, take a look at the document spelling out the project requirements.
The design of the web site itself is described in a design document.
MAYA and CIEE can do with help in many ways:
If you are based in Karnataka, you could volunteer to survey a school. Please contact CIEE for details.
If you are a computer nerd, located anywhere in the world, you could help us build and implement the system. Code contributions, reviews, and constructive criticism of our design and implementation are welcome.
The design of the system will be detailed at the design page. The code will be made available from the download page.
Since one of the major issues in undertaking this project is keeping it sustainable, training materials on the building blocks of the project (e.g. OSes, Relational Databases, Web technologies) are much needed.
Please send me a mail if you are interested in helping out with the website development project.
