Responsibilities included configuration, installation and maintainance of:
Large Sun clusters composed of diskless 3/50 workstations with 3/180 and 3/280 file servers and running SunOS 3.4.
Microvax II, II-GPX and VaxStation 2000 workstations running Ultrix 2.0, some with custom NFS configurations.
IBM PC/RT workstations (with APA-16 displays) running ACIX 4.2 and ACIS 4.3.
In the installation of each workstation or cluster, I was responsible for negotiations with and/or training of large numbers of faculty and auxilliary system support staff members by providing seminars and personal consulting. My responsibilities also included design configurations, schedule and direct installation of cabling and hardware, generating and installing system software and generally providing ongoing maintainance and support.
As a Principal Engineer, I was responsible for evaluation, research and development of system software products including X Window System V10 and V11, Andrew, NeWS, and new releases of the UNIX operating system.
I was also actively involved in testing and prototyping of new window-based applications in association with other departments on campus. My management duties included interviewing, hiring, and managing 5 direct reports (one technical writer and 4 senior programmers).
