Abstract

After years of development by the High Performance Computing (HPC) community, grid computing has become one of the hottest buzzwords in technology today. This talk will discuss what a HPC grid is, the technologies in involved in building one, and how one can be built in a FreeBSD environment. Additionally, it discusses ways in which FreeBSD could be enhanced to attract users of HPC grids.

This presentation accompanies a paper title Using Globus With FreeBSD by Brooks Davis and Craig Lee of The Aerospace Corporation. The paper was published in the Proceedings of the FREENIX Track: 2004 USENIX Annual Technical Conference. p147-152.

Paper Abstract

After years of development by the high performance computing (HPC) community, grid computing has hit the mainstream as one of the hottest buzzwords in computing technology today. This paper examines the issues involved in integrating FreeBSD with the Globus Toolkit, the de facto standard for grid computing. Particular attention is paid to interactions between Globus and FreeBSD's package management system. Ways in which FreeBSD could be enhanced to make it a more attractive platform for Globus are also discussed.
