Frederic Culot

portrait

I am Frederic Culot, a ports committer since October 16, 2010. This was my introduction email.

My mentors were sahil@ and wen@. They have been very helpful, many thanks to them!

I am now flying solo since February 10, 2011.

On October 23, 2011 I was appointed co-mentor with jadawin@ to assist clement@ during his reintegration into the project.

On January 28, 2012, after more than 700 commits I finally earned my first pointy hat by breaking INDEX :'(
I specified an unexisting dependency when importing www/trac-permredirect (see ports/164377).
As a punishment I wrote a page listing the most common mistakes committers could do to earn a pointyhat, hoping it could prevent such stupid mistakes.

On June 1, 2012, I started co-mentoring Jase Thew (jase@) with flo@.

October 16, 2012: already two years since my first commit :)
1,157 commits and 690 closed PRs later, I still find it fun so let's see where we are in two years!

On February 15, 2013, an article I wrote about the organizational structure and the culture we have at FreeBSD was published in BSD Magazine.

On April 4, 2013, I started co-mentoring William Gryzbowski (wg@) with jpaetzel@.

On April 6, 2013, I gave a talk at the Central European BSD-Day conference which took place in Naples. Here is the summary of my talk:
Business Schools teach you during expensive MBA studies how managers should shape the structure and influence the culture of organizations so that they become more innovative. Concepts such as natural systems, self-organization, creative swiping, boundary spanning, empowerment are known to be helpful in making employees more creative. To save you the trouble of paying for costly business courses and based on my view as a committer, this talk addresses the question to know whether or not FreeBSD is the right place to develop innovative ideas.
You can have a look at the slides, a picture taken during the talk, and the video recorded during the event.

On May 28 and 29, 2013, I managed the FreeBSD booth with some friends at the Solutions Linux exhibition in Paris. I prepared a poster to attract people to our booth.

On July 4, 2013, I started co-mentoring John Marino (marino@) with bapt@.

On September 24, 2013, I started co-mentoring Danilo Gondolfo (danilo@) with wg@.

October 16, 2013: three years since my first commit, with a bit more than 1,700 commits
and almost 1,000 PRs closed.

On November 30, 2013 I participated in the "Journées Méditerranéennes des Logiciels Libres", which is a French conference about open-source software during which I gave the same talk as for the BSD-Day conference on FreeBSD's organizational structure and culture.

On March 1, 2014, I started my term as a portmgr-lurker, helping tabthorpe@ with secretary work.
Here is my introduction interview to the program.

On March 14, 2014, I started mentoring Kurt Jaeger (pi@) with jadawin@.

On May 16, 2014 I took over as portmgr secretary.

On August 21, 2014, I published a video to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the ports tree.

On February 20, 2016, I released the first version of Portal, a ncurses-based front-end to FreeBSD's package manipulation tool pkg(8). You can follow its development here.

End of May, 2016, I decided to step as portmgr secretary, after two years at that position. I felt it was time for me to pass my hat to someone else.
